1. Stealthy Bright Automotive gives hints about electric car launch
Indiana-based startup plans to unveil gas-electric plug-in hybrid capable of reaching 400 miles on a tank of gas at Norway auto show in May.
Anderson, Ind.-based startup Bright Automotive is being cagey about the details of its gas-electric plug-in hybrid set to debut at the Electric Vehicle Symposium in Norway in May.
The one-year-old company has created buzz because of its origins in the consulting organization Rocky Mountain Institute and the track record of CEO John Waters, who invented the battery pack system for General Motors’ EV1 electric vehicle, which was discontinued after three years in 1999.
Bright Vice President of Marketing Lyle Shuey told the Cleantech Group that the company has designed the vehicle from scratch, using lightweight materials, aerodynamic shapes, low-resistance tires, and highly efficient battery and drivetrain systems.
“In order to make a plug-in hybrid cost-effective, a person must look at the entire vehicle structure,” Shuey said today. “The aerodynamics, all the platform efficiencies, and the most important thing is mass. Every gram of mass increases the size and cost of the battery.”
Bright says low-resistance tires can improve fuel economy by 6 percent to 9 percent, and a 10 percent weight reduction improves fuel efficiency by 7 percent. Bright is working to replace steel with strong lightweight materials. In all, the company is seeking to reduce vehicle weight by more than half, allowing it to use smaller and less costly batteries.
Shuey said the company is still “looking at multiple battery cell tecBlogger: Hunting All Info`s about Technology For You - Edit Entri " Bright Automotive "hnologies around the world” to power the car, which Bright says will have an electric range of 30 miles and a full range of 400 miles.
“We’ll take all the best technologies available,” he said. “We’re not tying the vehicle to any existing infrastructure or any materials.”

2. A manufacturer in Lincoln turns from the automotive industry to military, nuclear and solar industries
LINCOLN — A high-precision machining and plating company that formerly did most of its work for the automotive industry has been awarded a three-year contract to manufacture elements for 40mm training ammunition that explodes with color.
The Mk281 ammunition fits high-velocity machine guns and rocket launchers used by the Marines and Special Forces.
It’s all part of a new product category known as “green ammunition,” which is designed to be environmentally friendly to everyone — unless, of course, you take a direct hit.
John Maconi, chief operating officer for Greystone Corp., said the new contract to produce the steel projectile bodies for the ammunition is partially underwritten by a $500,000 loan from the Rhode Island Economic Development Commission.
In addition to the work for the Department of Defense, the 77-year-old company also manufactures components for the nuclear, solar-power and aerospace industries, also supported by the EDC loan.
Greystone moved away from automotive work — for example, the company makes charge holders to help air bags explosively inflate in a collision — because of problems in that industry.
“It’s all because of the automotive downturn,” said Maconi. “Automotive is rough right now. We’ve been in business since 1932 and we have three projects of this magnitude that will transform us from automotive to defense, solar and nuclear. And we’re a major supplier to the aerospace industry.”
“We went into this for survival,” he said.

3. Volt-Lite: Bright Automotive Building an E-REV
Those who have followed the Volt story long enough will remember that the consulting firm Rocky Mountain Institute has spun off its own start-up car company called Bright Automotive. The CEO of this fledgling automaker is John Waters, an engineer who it turns out used to work for GM on the EV-1.
Waters came out a year and a half or so ago criticizing the Volt’s design and engineering, mostly concerned about it being to heavy and therefore less economical. At that time he said “[The Volt] is a 4,000-pound vehicle. The drag coefficient is around .30. They [GM] forgot everything they learned on the EV1 so for me, it is a very discouraging concept, the fact that it is inefficient.”
Now he’s gone so far as to design a car that one might call the Volt-lite.
At this point we don’t know much about the car as hasn’t been revealed yet. That is set for May at the Electric Vehicle Symposium in Norway.
The car is expected to have a 30 mile-electric range, and powered either by lithium-ion or possibly even nickel-metal hydride batteries. There will be a 1.6 liter 4-cylinder range extender on-board that allows 400 miles of driving on a full tank of gas.
RMI is known for encouraging lightweight vehicles and has a relationship with the carbon fiber industry. “We’re not limited by leveraging steel relationships,” say Waters, referring to the Volt’s heavy steel frame. This car will be built around a lighter cheaper battery pack.
Bright hopes to build 30,000 cars it its first year and up to 50,000 cars per year by 2013.

4. Bright Automotive to Hawk the Anti-Chevy Volt, But Where’s the Money?
The way Bright Automotive CEO John Waters tells it, General Motors forgot any lessons learned from its first foray into electric vehicles. Waters, who headed up design for GM’s initial EV-1 project, is skeptical that a hulking steel platform like GM’s Chevy Volt can be economical. Instead, he tells us, if you want to make a plug-in for the mass market at decent profit margins, you need to design around a smaller, lighter (read: less costly) battery pack.
That’s the tack Waters has taken with Bright Automotive’s first vehicle: a lightweight, aerodynamic plug-in hybrid. The Indiana-based startup was spun out of the not-for-profit think tank and consulting firm Rocky Mountain Institute a little over a year ago. Founded by Amory Lovins, RMI is famously committed to the idea of “lightweighting” vehicles to improve efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.
bright-auto-waters“We’re not limited by leveraging steel relationships,” Waters said, contrasting Bright’s “clean sheet” approach with GM’s longstanding ties to the steel industry. As a startup, he added, “agility allows us to tap into complete, solid business models and physics.”
At this stage, however, Bright remains long on vision and short on details. What we do know is that Bright’s first prototype car, said to have a 30-mile all-electric range and 400-mile extended range with a small gas engine, is slated to debut this May at Norway’s Electric Vehicle Symposium. It’s also clear that the company faces some serious financial hurdles before moving into production.
